The Organization

At Ascend Justice, our mission is to empower individuals and families impacted by gender-based violence or the child welfare system to achieve safety and stability through holistic legal advocacy and system reform. Our Protective Orders Division provides same-day services for Orders of Protection at our Cook County Domestic Violence Courthouse location. Our other office also provides comprehensive services in the following areas: family law, immigration, child welfare, incarcerated survivors, housing and employment issues, crime victim compensation applications, and other economic justice issues.

Job Description

Outreach:

  • Research social services organizations to assess potential referral sources for services such as: financial assistance, access to emergency shelter, housing, community health services, food pantries, transportation assistance, and more.
  • Maintain and update resource list of those services most accessed by Ascend Justice clients.
  • Help facilitate calls for donations from our supporter base, coordinating drop-off appointments, and assisting in organizing our client closet.

Case Management:

  • Assessment: Assist CSC with interviewing Ascend Justice clients to determine social service needs and safety concerns.
  • Resources and referrals: work directly with clients either in person or over the phone to provide resources and referrals.
  • Follow-up: Conduct follow-up phone calls or meetings to check-in on client’s wellbeing, progress on goals set, ensure client’s needs were met.
  • Accompaniment: Attend court with Ascend Justice clients, appointments at social service agencies, police station or other agencies as appropriate.

Intake:

  • Assess social service and safety needs (public benefits, housing assistance, etc.) of clients applying for Ascend Justice services. Conduct phone / in-person interviews where necessary to determine eligibility for services, identify basic case facts, and identify social service needs of clients.
  • Assist with brief client call backs, scheduling follow-up appointments for intake, and other follow-up duties such as entering requisite data into Ascend Justice’s case management system.

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to converse in Spanish (or any other non-English language often spoken in the Chicago area) with clients without needing an interpreter.
  • Working knowledge of and sensitivity to issues related to gender-based violence
  • Previous experience working with immigrant communities a plus.
  • Ability to work independently, research, problem solve and strategize.
  • Must be available to work a minimum of 10-15 hours per week during the school year and a minimum of 20 hours during the summer. Full days are preferred.

  • Resources and referrals: work directly with clients either in person or over the phone to provide resources and referrals.
  • Follow-up: Conduct follow-up phone calls or meetings to check-in on client’s wellbeing, progress on goals set, ensure client’s needs were met.
  • Accompaniment: Go with Ascend Justice clients to court, social service agencies, police station or other agencies as appropriate.

Crisis Intervention:

  • Provide assistance with crisis intervention and client support services in the Protective Orders Division.

Qualifications:
