Incarcerated Survivors

We provide legal services related to:

Divorce, parenting, and pregnancy

Guardianship and child welfare

Orders of Protection

Our Incarcerated Survivors team works with people who are or have been previously incarcerated in women’s prisons in Illinois. We have helped incarcerated survivors get Orders of Protection and file for divorce from their abusive partners while in prison. We have helped others get more visitation rights and parenting time with their kids, even while still incarcerated. We have helped survivors who are pregnant with their legal needs while incarcerated. We also help establish guardianships for children while moms are incarcerated. We have helped incarcerated survivors file for resentencing under the Gender-Based Violence and Postpartum Resentencing Acts. Over 90% of all people incarcerated in women’s prisons are survivors of domestic and/or sexual violence, and we provide these survivors with services across all of our practice areas.

If you think you or a loved one might need our incarcerated survivor services, please call 312.971.5932 or tell your loved one to ask the staff at their correctional facility about Ascend Justice.

Launched in March 2021, our work with incarcerated survivors of gender-based violence continues to grow.

Check out our program launch video to learn about this important practice area at Ascend Justice and hear how we’re advocating for the rights of incarcerated people and providing the resources and assistance they need.
